Our People

Our team of legal and insurance professionals, together with our support staff, is committed to providing outstanding professional services to our insured law practices. We acknowledge our unique position as a licensed and regulated insurance company which is part of the legal profession. We also recognise our role in ensuring that the profession’s obligation to clients who have suffered loss as a consequence of negligence is appropriately managed and met.

The team continuously assesses internal work practices and works closely with our panel of external lawyers to develop more proactive, efficient and cost-effective ways of managing claims. Our aim is to reduce the frequency and cost of claims and, as a consequence, provide you with predictable and affordable insurance premiums.

Lawcover Insurance Board

Duncan has over 30 years experience in the Insurance industry in Australia, the United Kingdom and India. He held a number of senior executive roles including as CEO of Vero and CGU Insurance. He now holds a number of non-executive Board positions including Challenger Limited, Genworth Mortgage Insurance and Hollard Insurance.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics and is a honorary life member of ANZIIF. He is also a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Catherine has enjoyed an extensive executive career in financial services, across insurance, investments, wealth management and banking, and as a consultant in corporate strategy and planning. Her roles included General Manager, Investment Management & Life at Zurich Financial Services Australia, General Manager, Wealth Strategy at St.George Bank and Senior Consultant at Tillinghast Towers Perrin, as well as various roles at the Commonwealth Bank.

She is currently Chairman of Gateway Bank Limited, a customer-owned banking institution with around $1b in assets, and also serves as a Director of HCL Life Limited, a subsidiary of the health fund HCF, and a Director of St.Catherine’s Aged Care Services.

Catherine is a graduate of the University of Sydney (BA (Hons)) and Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MBA). She is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Financial Services Institute of Australasia and the Australasian Mutuals’ Institute.

Darryl Browne is the principal of BROWNE.Linkenbagh Legal Services at Leura. He is an Accredited Specialist in Wills and Estates. Darryl is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. He is a member of STEP and a Notary Public.

For more than a decade Darryl served as a director of a not-for-profit company operating in the disability sector. He has been on the Board of two private schools. Since 2010, he has been a Councillor of The Law Society of New South Wales. He is a member of the Legal Aid Commission Board and Specialist Accreditation Board. He is a member of the State government’s Steering Committee on preventing and responding to elder abuse. He also serves as a member of the University of Sydney’s Law Extension Committee.

Darryl has served on many Committees of The Law Society of New South Wales, including Professional Conduct, Ethics, Elder Law and Succession, Business Law, Human Rights, Future, Criminal Law, Property, Fidelity Fund Management and Disclosure. He is currently chair of the Elder Law, Capacity and Succession Committee. He facilitates The Law Society of New South Wales’ Elder Abuse Working Group. He is currently chair of the Law Council of Australia’s Elder Law and Succession Committee.

Darryl regularly writes and speaks on legal subjects, principally estate planning and estate litigation. He has a keen interest in the law and legal education.

Justin has over thirty years experience in both the insurance and banking industries in Australia and Asia. He has held senior executive roles at Insurance Australia Group (including Group Chief Risk Officer, and CEO Asia); and ANZ Banking Group (including General Manager Asia, and Regional GM, Business Banking Asia Pacific). He is currently a non-executive director on a number of boards including Westpac’s Insurance boards, Aviva Limited (Singapore), and Nuchev Pty Ltd. He holds a Bachelor of Economics and is a Certified Practising Accountant.

Michael Tidball was appointed Chief Executive Officer of The Law Society of New South Wales in 2006. He had a policy background with the Australian Government prior to working as a Ministerial Advisor to the NSW Government. He has worked in the private sector in financial services, prior to serving in a Senior Executive Role in the ACT Government in Economic and Business Development Policy and Project work.

Michael has a number of years’ experience in legal sector administration management. He was appointed Chief Operating Officer of The Law Society of New South Wales to prepare the organisation for the introduction of voluntary membership, which took effect on 1 July 2004.

Since being appointed Chief Executive Officer, he has overseen a range of reforms including The Law Society’s response to National Legal Profession Reform, which is intended to establish a single Australian legal services market and regulatory system. Other key areas of focus have been the development of different membership strategies and offerings across the various segments of the profession, as well as playing a lead role in the Law Society’s representational work.

In 2013, Michael was appointed the Chief Executive Officer of LAWASIA, a confederation of law associations across the Asia Pacific region committed to advancing the rule of law and pursing the interests of the legal profession there.

He serves as a Director of the Lawcover Group of Companies and on the Board of Management of QL.

Nancy has over 30 years of finance, insurance and risk management experience, including 20+ years in senior management roles and 15 years board experience on a range of financial institutions, infrastructure, and not-for-profit boards.

Nancy is currently Chairman of Perpetual Equity Investment Company (PIC.ASX), Deputy Chairman of Taronga Conservatory Society, a Director of Perpetual Limited (PPT.ASX), HCF Life and ING Bank.

Her former executive positions include Managing Director and Asia Pacific Head of Ambac Assurance, Managing Director of ABN-Amro, AIDC and Citibank. Prior to her career in finance, Nancy was a trial attorney for Met Life in New York.

Richard is a legal practitioner with over 35 years’ post-admission experience and in 2005 became a Law Society of New South Wales Accredited Specialist in Property Law. Currently he is Principal of Richard Harvey & Associates, a property and general practice law firm situated in Mosman.

Richard has been a Councillor of The Law Society of New South Wales since 2011, is Vice President of the Society and chairs the Property Law Committee and The Law Society of New South Wales Specialist Accreditation Board. He is a committee member of the Diversity Committee of The Law Society of New South Wales.

Richard is also a member of The Law Society of New South Wales and REI Joint Copyright Committee. Richard is Secretary of the North Metropolitan Law Society and is also actively involved in Rugby administration with the NSW Suburban Rugby Union, including Chair of the Union’s Judiciary Appeals Committee.

Lawcover Executive

Michael joined Lawcover in September 2012. Previously, he was Chief Operating Officer of MDA National, an Australia-wide medical professional indemnity insurance provider.

With over 30 years’ experience in the professional indemnity insurance industry in both Australia and the United Kingdom, Michael has consulted to medical and other professional indemnity/insurance organisations. In that time he has provided expertise on both strategy and operational management, particularly in supporting the professional indemnity needs of professionals.

Kerrie joined Lawcover in February 2013 as Chief Operations Officer with primary responsibility for leading Professional Services – Claims, Insurance Services, Underwriting and Practice Support Services.

Kerrie was admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 1996 and her career has spanned several Sydney law firms. She specialised in personal injury, professional indemnity and insurance litigation.

In 2001, Kerrie moved from legal practice to the insurance industry, focusing on public liability, personal injury/catastrophic claims, professional indemnity and financial lines. Her insurance career has included time with AMP/GIO, Suncorp, QBE and MDA National.

Kerrie’s broad expertise includes leading diverse teams delivering professional indemnity, advisory and risk management education services with a key focus on successful outcomes, business rigour and client value.

Peter joined Lawcover in February 2018. He has over 25 years of finance experience, and brings to his role a breadth and depth of general insurance knowledge, developed both locally and internationally.

Prior to joining Lawcover, Peter had a successful career with the QBE Insurance Group, holding a number of executive management roles with areas of expertise in strategic finance, treasury, reinsurance and capital management in a career spanning 16 years. He is financially and commercially astute with a strong ability to understand and lever key drivers of business value. Peter is passionate about developing and leading strong teams to bring positive change to the organisation.

Peter has a Bachelor of Business from Charles Sturt University and is an Associate of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ).

Verne Baker was appointed as Lawcover’s Chief Risk Officer in January 2015.

Verne was a senior actuary at KPMG and has over 34 years’ experience in the insurance industry. He has undertaken numerous enterprise risk management roles in his career, and has led projects on capital management, investment and reinsurance optimisation.

Prior to joining KPMG in 2013, Verne was a Partner and General Insurance Practice Leader at Deloitte Insurance and Consulting Solutions in Hong Kong.

Claims and Legal

Elissa provides general corporate advice to Executive management and the Board and advises on policy wordings, coverage issues and issues affecting insurance for solicitors in New South Wales. She is also the Company Secretary for Lawcover and handles claims and advises insured solicitors.

Elissa specialised in insurance litigation, particularly professional negligence, as a solicitor in both Sydney and London.

She is an Associate of the Governance Institute and a Chartered Secretary.

Rosemary has 10 years’ experience in private practice, gained in the commercial litigation department of Freehills and as a Senior Associate in the professional indemnity insurance department of Minter Ellison.

She practised as a lawyer in the corporate and professional indemnity insurance divisions of FAI and HIH, handling claims made against the insurers’ professionally insured clients and as a solicitor on the record, conducting litigation in the lower courts.

Following an earlier period with Lawcover, Rosemary rejoined the organisation as a Claims Solicitor since 2002. In June 2008 she was appointed to the role of Senior Claims Solicitor.

Emma gained her early experience as a litigation solicitor at Hunt & Hunt in Sydney, followed by a term as a Judge’s Associate in the Federal Court.

She moved to Perth in 1987 where she joined local firm Downings Legal. She was a partner at Downings for 12 years, practising predominantly in professional indemnity insurance litigation, and was managing partner from 1995 to 2000.

Following her return to Sydney, Emma joined Lawcover in 2002.

Jennifer joined Lawcover in 2002 following appointments at Phillips Fox, where she was a Senior Associate, and AMP, where she managed the Corporate and Special Risks portfolio.

Jennifer has worked in professional negligence litigation since 1993.

Jenny joined Minter Simpson & Co in 1984 and was later appointed as the Associate to Mr Justice Franki of the Federal Court before returning to Minters in 1985. At Minters she specialised in professional negligence litigation and university law and was seconded twice — to Macquarie University and the University of Technology Sydney.

She was the University Solicitor for Macquarie University from June 2000 to March 2008 where she undertook a variety of work, including complex advices, commercial transactions, intellectual property matters and litigation.

Jenny has accumulated approximately 21 years’ experience in professional negligence litigation throughout her career.

Milica joined Lawcover in 2013 after her admission as a solicitor that year. While completing her degree, she had worked as a paralegal in private practice in the areas of litigation, property, criminal and family law.

At Lawcover Milica assists the Claims Solicitors in a wide range of areas including the conduct of litigated and unlitigated claims and case management.

Tony came to the legal profession through the Solicitors Admission Board course and worked at Hunt & Hunt for approximately eight years.

He has since amassed over 20 years’ experience in professional indemnity and directors’ and officers’ liability claims, including 7 years as Professional Liability Claims Manager at QBE Insurance. In this position Tony was responsible for leading a claims team and managing a significant claims portfolio.

Tony has acted in claims against virtually all professional groups, including engineers, architects, surveyors, accountants, solicitors, insurance brokers and property valuers. He joined Lawcover in 2008.

Practice Support Services

Before joining Lawcover as a Claims Solicitor in 2001, Janice worked in private practice and at the Law Society of NSW as well as other legal positions.

In 2006 she became the Risk Services Manager with sole responsibility for managing and implementing the Lawcover Risk Management Education Program and in 2011 Manager, Practice Support Services.

In her current role Janice is responsible for the development and delivery of a risk education program comprising courses, presentations, publications, practice visitation schemes, claims research analysis and practice tools.

She works closely with key stakeholders such as the Law Society of NSW, Regional Law Societies, College of Law, The Office of the Legal Services Commissioner and universities.

Jen McMillan was admitted to legal practice in New South Wales in 1989 and in Western Australia in 1992. She is a Law Society of New South Wales accredited specialist in wills and estates, with extensive experience in this area in private practice as well as with a trustee company and as the Practice Leader – Wills and Estates in the College of Law’s LLM (Applied Law) program.

Jen is a member of the Law Society of New South Wales Elder Law and Succession Committee and a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. She is a Legal Practice Consultant with Lawcover and is also a part-time Senior Member (Legal) in the Guardianship Division of the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Malcolm joined Lawcover in August 2012 and is Practice Risk Manager. In this role, he conducts risk reviews of law firms which involve onsite visits and meetings with the principals, employed solicitors and senior support staff.

Malcolm presents risk management strategies through the Lawcover Risk Management Education Program’s workshops for principals, on-site at law firms, at the practice management courses of The Law Society of NSW, College of Law, FMRC, Regional Law Societies’ seminars and other events.

Prior to joining Lawcover, Malcolm ran his own company for 20 years providing consulting services to the general insurance industry and the legal profession as well researching and producing conferences. He has been a sole director and a co-director of private companies including a subsidiary of a publicly listed UK company and a director of a Sydney club.

With a degree in Psychology and his experience in business, Malcolm focuses his work on the importance of effective law firm management and profitability which helps reduce professional negligence risks.

Insurance

Rosa joined Lawcover in March 2000 after graduating from Sydney University with a Science Degree.

She has completed Certificate IV in General Insurance through the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF).

In December 2014 she was appointed Team Leader, Insurance Services.

Rachel joined Lawcover in March 2019 as Senior Underwriter.

Rachel was admitted as a solicitor in NSW in 1998, and has dedicated her career to the insurance industry, with a particular emphasis on professional indemnity insurance. Rachel’s expertise spans insurance broking, underwriting and claims across a range of risks. Her insurance career has included time with JLT, KPMG and MDA National. She is currently studying for a Masters of Law at Sydney University.

Rachel’s key focus is on providing professionals with insurance solutions that enable them to practise with confidence.

Candace joined Lawcover in June 2014 in the Practice Support Services team and transferred to Insurance Services in the role of Underwriter / Client Support in January 2017.

She has a Bachelor of Science and Post Graduate Diploma from University College London.

Prior to joining Lawcover, Candace had 13 years of work experience in administration, project coordination and client support across a variety of industries. She has worked in Australia, the UK and her native New Zealand.

Erin joined Lawcover in March 2018 in a client support role and transferred into the role of Underwriter/Systems Support in May 2018.

She has completed Certificate IV in General Insurance through the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIFF).

Prior to joining Lawcover, Erin had work experience in a variety of client support/administrative roles across various industries in Canada and Australia.
